Gettysburg to DC

We stopped at Harper's Ferry in VA on our way to DC. Beautiful stop, but not my favorite site of the trip.
So, the historical information about John Brown and the reconstructed arsenal. Honestly, I was not thrilled about Harper's Ferry. NO WHERE did it mention that Brown's plan included killing Southern whites in their beds, and that the reason for the general slave uprising he called for was to slaughter people in Virginia. No-where did it mention his role in Kansas and the Pottawatomie Creek Massacre. The North made Brown into a martyr, and this historical site fails to rectify that illusion. He was a murderer and insane.

This monument is placed at the original spot of the Fort where Brown was captured. It is located on a bluff slightly elevated above the town.

Harper's Ferry is a quaint little town. Much of it is original.

Trains still run through Harper's Ferry and the Shenandoah River Valley.

This is of course the Iwo Jima Memorial. If you have not read Flags of Our Fathers, I highly recommend it!

The Iwo Jima Memorial from another angle. This is one of my favorite memorials in DC.

So, not much today. Tomorrow we have lectures and go to the National Archives. For now, I have reading to finish.....Malcolm X and Obama.
